Purple Haze, 2020

Purple Haze was created during the darkest days of the COVID lockdown, a time filled with uncertainty and isolation. The quilt reflects this atmosphere through a deep, moody color palette centered around the rich, complex hues of purple and its closely related tones. These colors embody the emotional depth and introspection of that time, capturing both a sense of heaviness and a quiet beauty.

The lyrics from Asaf Avidan's Darkness Song—"I've got a darkness shining through me"—resonated with me as I worked on the quilt. This was music I listened to repeatedly during the lockdown, and Avidan describes the song as an exploration of accepting darkness as part of our light, a theme mirrored in the quilt’s design. The shifting values of color and form reflect the complexity of human experience, resilience, and self-acceptance in times of isolation.
